Kathleen Parkman, RD, LDN, CNSC, is the Registered Dietitian for the Bariatric Surgery Department at UMMC. She completed her Undergraduate Degree in Biology at Ursinus College, followed by her Dietetic Internship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. She recently received her Nutrition Support Certification (CNSC), specializing in complex patient care. She has experience with Nutrition throughout all disease states, but has a passion for the Bariatric population. She is able to work with patients one-on-one to develop the most appropriate intervention for them; whether it be preparing for Bariatric Surgery or General Healthy Eating.
Mary Beth Sodus
More than 10 years of experience as a dietitian and nutrition counselor have made Mary Beth a passionate instructor on topics such as low-fat nutrition, label reading, and food safety. Mary Beth - a specialist in gastric bypass nutrition - has written teaching tools that empower gastric bypass patients to practice smart, healthy eating habits. Mary Beth's background in medical nutrition therapy for obese as well as diabetic patients ensures that she will ably assist patients in making important lifestyle changes. "It's not just about the foods but also about making wise choices," she says. Mary Beth, who practices yoga and ballroom dancing in her spare time, also believes strongly in the importance of exercise.
Ra'Mona A. Brown-Carter
Ra'Mona Brown relocated to the state of Maryland from New Haven, CT in 2007 and has been an employee at the University of Medical Center over five years. Ra'Mona started in the Department of Peri-Operative Services as an administrative assistant in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). In July 2012 she became the first Patient Navigator in the Center for Weight Management and Wellness. Ra'Mona operates in two capacities. The first is chart advancement: reviewing all diagnostic testing, and pre-requisites required to build each patients medical chart to be advanced for medical approval with the medical staff in the Bariatric Surgery Program and financial approval through insurance companies. The second is marketing; Ra'Mona can be found participating in various community outreach programs representing the Center for Weight Management and Wellness. She can also be found greeting each future patient and their family supporters at every information seminar given to educate the new patient on the various aspects of weight loss surgery. Starting in January 2013 Ra'Mona will be heading a new weight loss surgery support group at the Medical Center, which will meet on every 2nd Thursday of the month in the Patient Resource Class Room from 5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
