Mark D. Kligman, MD
Mark Kligman, MD, an expert in minimally invasive gastric bypass surgery, is the director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness and an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Since 1999, he has performed more than 450 laparoscopic gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) operations with an outstanding rate of success.
A trained trauma surgeon, Dr. Kligman developed an interest in bariatric surgery while at the Medical College of Ohio, where he served as the division chief of Trauma/Critical Care/Emergency Services and the medical director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. He then decided to devote the majority of his practice to weight loss surgery.
He received his medical degree from Wayne State University. In addition to a residency and a research fellowship at the University of Maryland, he completed fellowships in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at the University of Miami.
Dr. Kligman has written many articles and given numerous presentations on laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. He has been named one of Baltimore magazine's "Top Doctors" for bariatric surgery since 2010.

Ashley Olhausen, Patient Navigator
Ashley Olhausen graduated from Central Connecticut State University in May 2014 majoring in Psychology with a minor in Marketing. Ashley assists in facilitating the in-person patient seminars at all four locations and meets with patients at their initial appointment. Ashley serves as the primary contact for patients, and ensures that all required medical and insurance documents are received. Ashley also assists in scheduling surgeries and appointments.
Mary Beth Sodus, RD, CPT
Mary Beth Sodus is a registered dietitian in the UM Center for Weight Management and Wellness, a nutrition therapist and a specialist in nutrition for bariatric surgery. She is passionate about nutrition education and counseling. She is an excellent and energetic public speaker with more than 20 years of experience. She facilitates creative support groups to empower patients to help them make their best life decisions for surgery.
Ms. Sodus is a facilitator for the Am I Hungry program, which teaches mindful eating skills for a sustainable, balanced lifestyle. She holds a certification in personal training from the American Council on Exercise. Her interests include the study of appetite and satiety and how they integrate with medication, endocrine changes and physical activity.
Trish Martin, DNP, CRNP
Trish Martin is our Bariatric Program Manager and a nurse practitioner. She has worked within the University of Maryland Medical System for nearly 25 years as an intensive care nurse, an educator for the School of Nursing and as a nurse practitioner in the Shock Trauma Center. Dr. Martin recently spent a year as a clinical educator in accident and emergency in Rwanda (East Africa) through a unique opportunity through the University of Maryland School of Nursing.
Dr. Martin received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She received her master’s degree in nursing with a concentration in trauma/critical care from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She went on to receive her postgraduate degree as a nurse practitioner and doctor of nursing practice from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Her interests include emergency and critical care nursing, wound care, obesity and related diseases and exercise therapy.
Eric M. Barron, MS, CSCS, EP-C
Eric M. Barron earned both his Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science and Master’s Degree in Applied Health Physiology from Salisbury University and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA and a Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C) through the American College of Sports Medicine. He brings over 8 years of experience educating and working with clients, helping them pursue sustainable weight loss and physical activity goals. Eric is also currently the Assistant Director of Fitness at the University of Maryland, Baltimore where he manages Fitness Programs, Group Exercise, Personal Training and facility operations and an Exercise Science Adjunct Instructor at Salisbury University. In his free time he enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his newborn son, wife and two chocolate labs.
Mary King, RD, LD, CDE
Mary King graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics. She is a Registered, License Dietitian in Maryland, as well as a Certified Diabetes Educator. Her experience in dietetics includes health and wellness, diabetes, geriatric nutrition, heart health, weight control and pre- and post-bariatric surgery nutrition counseling.
Alexander Pictor, MSPH, RD, LDN
Alexander Pictor is a registered dietitian for the University of Maryland Center for Weight Management. While new to the University of Maryland team, Alex has spent the last six years helping patients manage their weight including through behavioral coaching, teaching group classes, health behavior change research and in weight management clinics.
Alex received his Masters of Science in Public Health, focusing on human nutrition, from Johns Hopkins. Prior to that, he completed his undergraduate studies in psychology at Northwestern University and holds a certificate of the culinary arts in professional cookery from Kendall College. Alex has a passion for food and nutrition and his interests include obesity and weight management, diabetes care, exercise therapy, health behavior change and promoting preventive health through technology.
Joanne Davis, RN, BSN
Joanne Davis RN, BSN is a registered nurse in the Center for Weight Management and Wellness at UMMS. She began her role as nurse for the Bariatric Surgery Program in 2012. As the Bariatric Program nurse Joanne plans and facilitates patient education, addresses clinical issues and collaborates with team members to develop and maintain a standard of care with patient safety and success at the forefront.
