University of Maryland Orthopaedics provides state-of-the-art sports medicine care to athletes and active individuals of all ages. Our specialists are uniquely qualified to treat acute and overuse injuries that occur in athletes and active people, as well as medical conditions unique to strenuous exercise and sports. We treat activity-related problems from head to toe, with special emphasis on the spine, knee, hip, shoulder and elbow, and foot and ankle. Our program emphasizes injury prevention, specialized rehabilitation strategies and state-of-the-art surgical techniques to treat a wide range of sports related injuries.
If a patient requires surgery, we opt for minimally invasive techniques whenever possible. Surgical care is provided at University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute, (formerly Kernan Hospital) a national leader in orthopaedics and rehabilitation. Specialty consultation can be accessed by using the resources of University of Maryland Medicine, which includes the affiliated community hospitals of the University of Maryland Medical System and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.
Our comprehensive sports medicine team includes fellowship-trained sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons, primary care sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists. One of the program's primary physicians, Dr. Craig Bennett, serves as the Official Medical Provider of Maryland Athletic teams.
In addition to treating sports medicine injuries, our physicians are actively involved in research studies directed at better understanding athletic injuries, improving treatment choices, and getting athletes and active individuals back on their feet faster.
