Social Media Tools Help Surgeons Educate Patients on Multiple Listing Options
Liver transplant surgeons are available to talk with patients about double- or multiple- listing via convenient channels, including smart phone applications or in-person meetings. Call 1-410-328-3444 to schedule a conversation with the liver team.
Patients who are already on a primary wait list for liver transplant at another center outside of Maryland can take advantage of social media tools to learn more about double- or multiple-listing with the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Patients can use video apps on their smart phone or computer to have a private, “real time” conversation with a liver transplant surgeon at UMMC about joining the transplant wait list as a second or third center.
Joining more than one wait list may help increase the chances of transplantation for patients who may be transplanted sooner at another center. The ultimate goal of multiple-listing is to help patients get transplanted sooner. Patients for whom multiple-listing may be an especially appealing option include:
- Patients with liver cancer who are able to travel.
- Patients who have identified a living liver donor.
Review UNOS’ commonly asked questions about multiple listing or read about a Boston patient who double-listed and got transplanted at Maryland.
Patients must meet all of the following criteria to be considered for double-listing with UMMC:
- Must be able to arrive at UMMC in Baltimore, MD within 12 hours of an organ becoming available for transplant.
- Must understand that transplant surgery is performed at UMMC in Baltimore.
- Patient can expect approximately one week of recovery as an in-patient at UMMC.
- Patient must secure lodging in Baltimore for one week AFTER discharge from UMMC to ensure patient can attend follow-up appointments with UMMC team before being released for long-term follow-up in hometown.
If a patient meets the criteria listed above, he or she is encouraged to contact the Transplant office at (410) 328-3444 to schedule a meeting via video tools or in-person with the liver team. The patient should plan to reserve one hour for the meeting. A caregiver is encouraged to join, if possible.
During the scheduled conversation, patients will use video applications on their smartphone or computer to “meet” one of the UMMC liver transplant surgeons and a transplant coordinator. The surgeon will discuss the wait listing process at UMMC. Patients and caregivers are encouraged to ask questions and get to know the surgeon and coordinator, who will become their main point of contact for additional questions.
During the meeting, neither the surgeon nor the patient is committed to placing the patient on the wait list or accepting a position on the liver transplant wait list.
The goal of the UMMC liver transplant team continues to be helping patients get the life-saving transplant care they need by increasing access to information and providing the highest standards of care.
