Non-Directed Kidney Donation

Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program

Non-Directed Kidney Donation

Donating a kidney is an important, life-changing decision. Most donors who contact the University of Maryland Transplant Center typically have an individual to whom they plan to donate their organ. However, some donors express interest about the potential of becoming a non-directed donor.

What is a non-directed donor?

A non-directed donor is an individual who has a desire to donate one of his or her kidneys, but does not have an existing recipient to receive the donation. In these instances, there is no definite plan regarding where the individual's kidney can be donated. It is up to the discretion of the individual centers to determine how that person's gift can be best utilized.

Why should I consider becoming a non-directed donor?

In the past, some people may have been reluctant to become organ donors because of the extensive and invasive operation that was necessary to remove the donated kidney. However, recent surgical advances have led to the development of a scarless, single-incision laparoscopic technique that allows surgeons to remove the kidney through a small incision in the donor's navel. This small incision allows for a quicker recovery, less pain and few, if any, long-term consequences for donors.

What steps should I take if I think I might be interested in becoming a non-directed donor?
