Overview of Multiple Listing

Some studies have shown that patients who join wait lists at more than one transplant center have an increased chance of getting transplanted sooner (UNOS.org). Multiple listing means that a patient has been evaluated and approved for the transplant wait list at two or more centers.

There are many factors that determine a patient’s wait time, including severity of organ failure, blood type and overall health status. While there are no guarantees that multiple listing will lead to earlier transplantation, there may be benefits in listing at transplant centers in different allocation regions where the donor “pool” is different.

How Multiple Listing Works:

  • A patient is eligible to join multiple wait lists at multiple transplant centers across the country.
  • A separate evaluation is required for each transplant center.
  • A patient can transfer wait time from original center to UMMC, where they are likely to receive an organ sooner due to UMMC’s innovative approach to organ utilization and post-transplant care.
  • Patients can transfer from one transplant center to another with no penalties, costs or loss of wait time.

Example: Patient has been on wait list at one transplant center for 365 days. Multiple lists at UMMC, and that 365 days wait time transfers to UMMC’s wait list.

Multiple Listing at UMMC

Wait listing at UMMC gives patients access to a different pool of available organs that may lead to earlier transplantation. The transplant team at UMMC has proven to be strongly equipped and highly successful at transplanting expanded criteria deceased donor organs, or organs that might fall outside of “standard” transplant criteria. This innovative approach to organ utilization makes more organs available to patients on UMMC’s wait list and can help them be transplanted sooner due to a larger pool of available organs.

When considering multiple listing with the University of Maryland Medical Center, patients are expected to share all medical records, complete any additional necessary testing and speak with either a UMMC transplant coordinator and/or physician from the UMMC transplant team. Patients can be evaluated for multiple listing at one of the many transplant practices staffed by the UMMC team around the state of Maryland.

Patients must be able to be physically present at UMMC in Baltimore within a limited number of hours of receiving an organ offer (proximity to UMMC varies by organ). Meeting this window of time is critical to ensure that the donor organ does not spend too much time outside of the body where it is not actively receiving a blood supply. Transplant coordinators will review the guidelines for multiple listing when patients call to express interest.

Transplant candidates eligible for multiple listing at UMMC include:

  • Kidney
  • Pancreas
  • Liver
  • Heart
  • Lung
  • Re-transplant candidates

According to data provided by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), transplant wait times are shorter or similar to national averages for each organ. View the latest wait times by organ at UMMC based on data reported publicly by SRTR for reporting period January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013:

Patients multiple listing at UMMC will be required to receive the transplant at UMMC and be available for follow-up care at UMMC immediately following the transplant.
