Through our primary care component, University of Maryland Orthopaedics offers a full range of services including evaluation of medical conditions such as sport-related concussions and exercise-induced asthma as well as pre-participation evaluations for school-age, college and recreational athletes.
Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
The orthopaedic surgeons at University of Maryland Medicine treat patients of all ages for a variety of sports-related orthopaedic injuries, including problems with muscle, tendon, ligament and bone in the arms and the legs. Their areas of specialties include knees, shoulders and ligament repair and reconstruction.
The surgeons work closely with the therapists of Kernan Hospital, a national leader in orthopaedics and rehabilitation, to develop appropriate regimens that help athletes and others restore the injured parts of the body to good working order. When surgery is required, our surgeons prefer minimally-invasive procedures to lessen time away from activity. Most of University of Maryland Orthopaedics' surgical care is provided at The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute (formerly Kernan Hospital).
For over 40 years the physical therapy program at The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute has provided rehabilitation services for athletes on college and high-school teams as well as Baltimore-area professional teams, including the Colts, the Bullets, the Skipjacks and the Blast. Now, as part of University of Maryland Medical System, they are providing this outstanding therapeutic care to everyone who participates in sports activities at any level.
The philosophy of the rehabilitation program at University of Maryland Orthopaedics is to get athletes back to their sport as quickly as possible. The therapists and trainers work around their patients' difficulties, keeping them in training even when they are injured; athletes return to action in good overall condition.
Therapy and rehabilitation services are available at two locations: The University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute and Kernan Physical Therapy and Spine Center. These locations are open six days a week with hours convenient for working people.
Each rehabilitation site offers advanced exercise equipment including treadmills, steppers, Nautilus equipment, Kaiser equipment and specialized testing equipment as well as ongoing strengthening and conditioning programs to prevent re-injury.
