School Mental Health Program
The University of Maryland School Mental Health Program (SMHP) seeks to enhance the learning environments of schools by removing barriers to learning and actively promoting the emotional well-being of students through effective mental health promotion and intervention in the schools.
School mental health clinicians work with students to cope with stress and to develop skills that promote positive social interactions, such as anger management and conflict resolution skills. When appropriate, referrals are made for more intensive psychiatric and psychological services.
Multidisciplinary Treatment Team
The SMHP team consists of various mental health professionals, including clinical social workers, psychologists, professional counselors and child and adolescent psychiatrists. The SMHP also serves as a training program for social work and psychology interns/externs-postdoctoral fellows and psychiatry fellows. Mental health services are provided to Baltimore's youth and their families directly within the school setting before, during or directly following the school day.
