Prostatitis is a poorly defined condition principally characterized by pelvic pain in men. The most common form of this disease is chronic prostatitis or chronic pelvic pain syndrome. This condition affects 2 million men annually. Little objective information to guide clinicians and patients is available. For this reason, the NIH formed an international consortium of medical centers and investigators to study the disease known as the Chronic Prostatitis Collaborative Research Network (CPCRN).

Dr. Alexander is the Principal Investigator of CPCRN at the University of Maryland site and has a long interest in the study of this disease. He is co-chairman of the CPCRN international group and is actively involved in the design and completion studies under the auspices of the CPCRN. He is the author or co-author of numerous studies including a landmark study of the standard therapy for CP/CPPS published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

We offer a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic options for chronic prostatitis at the Maryland Prostate Center, and continue to participate in and offer participation in clinical research trials available only at the Maryland Prostate Center and as part of CPCRN.
