Athletes are common sufferers of labral tears where the labrum which is the cartilage around the hip socket, ultimately connecting the thigh bone and the hip, tears. Pain can sometimes be felt in the groin or hip and there may be stiffness too. A very small tear can be treated successfully with physical therapy. More substantial tears often benefit from hip arthroscopy, where small instruments are placed into the hip joint to shave off the torn pieces of cartilage.
