Heart Center Programs

Advanced Lung Support

The University of Maryland is a major referral center for patients with complex lung disease who have exhausted standard treatment options. Cardiothoracic surgeons and pulmonology experts work together to care for patients with advanced lung disease who require the latest technology and surgical options to heal.

Cardiac Surgery

The University of Maryland Division of Cardiac Surgery offers an extensive range of cardiac surgical services, from repairing congenital heart defects in infants and children to performing minimally invasive aortic valve replacements, heart transplants and other complex procedures for high-risk patients.

Cardiovascular Medicine

The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine is known for leadership in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of cardiac disease. The division offers the most advanced diagnostic and treatment procedures for patients with coronary heart disease, valvular disease, heart failure, and circulatory system disorders.

With advanced cardiac catheterization labs and specialized operating facilities, the Heart Center offers a complete array of interventional procedures, recently developed technology for treating heart failure and devices for preventing cardiac arrest. The division also supports an active preventive cardiology effort that emphasizes risk factor modification and conducts community outreach activities such as cholesterol screenings.

Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

Our division, together with the Division of Cardiac Surgery, provides a wide range of ground breaking procedures in the areas of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, robotic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, mechanical assist devices, thoracic aortic surgery.

We offer a comprehensive Perioperative Blood Conservation Program at the University of Maryland, designed to minimize the use of blood products and intended to provide a safe environment for cardiac patients who want to minimize their exposure to blood products either because of their religious beliefs or because they have known contraindications to blood.

Cardiothoracic Transplant Program

Our program has greatly improved the lives of hundreds of other patients by identifying other treatments -- from advanced medicines to artificial heart pumps -- that successfully postponed or prevented the need for transplantation.

UMMC's cardiothoracic transplant program is unique in the region by providing the full spectrum of surgical options available to our patients. This allows us to tailor our approach to each patient. In addition, we are committed to developing promising new approaches to the care of patients with end-stage heart or lung disease.

Pediatric Cardiology

The Children's Heart Program at the University of Maryland Children's Hospital provides compassionate and comprehensive cardiac care for children from before birth through adulthood with a specialized team of pediatric cardiologists and surgeons, cutting-edge diagnostic technology and interventional procedures, and an emphasis on each individual patient and their entire family.

We provide the most complex medical, interventional and surgical care for patients with congenital heart disease from infancy through adulthood, addressing a need for extended cardiac care from pediatrics through life.

Sunjay Kaushal, M.D., Ph.D., our pediatric cardiac surgeon, is the only surgeon in Maryland who is board certified in adult congenital surgery, giving him the expertise to operate on newborn babies, children and adults with congenital heart disease.
