Tricuspid Valve Repair

In Maryland, University of Maryland Physicians Care for the Most Heart Surgery Patients - University of Maryland Medical Center

At the University of Maryland Heart and Vascular Center, we perform complex tricuspid valve repair procedures. While many centers choose to perform replacement procedures, we are committed to a “repair first” approach. A valve repair provides excellent results with fewer complications.

Tricuspid Valve Repair at the University of Maryland

A valve repair procedure is a technically complex and challenging procedure. Our surgeons perform a high volume of tricuspid valve repairs every year, giving us a depth of experience and expertise. We have the capabilities and resources to see you safely through your procedure. Meet our team.

Benefits of a valve repair compared to a valve replacement include:

  • Less chance of infection of blood clots, since the valve is your own tissue
  • Less disruption and manipulation of your heart structure
  • No need to take blood thinners (which are necessary for patients who undergo valve replacement procedures)
  • Better outcome and survival rates

Minimally Invasive Tricuspid Valve Repair

We use the least invasive approach possible. Many times, we are able to perform a tricuspid valve repair using a percutaneous (through the skin) approach instead of doing open heart surgery.

Our minimally invasive approach is especially important for patients with congenital heart disease. These patients often need to undergo multiple surgeries, and a percutaneous surgery leads to a much easier recovery and less scarring.
