Research Gift

Hitting The Ground Running - Generous $200,000 Stoll Gift Advances Otorhinolaryngology Research of Scott Strome, M.D.

Scott Strome, M.D., has barely been at the University of Maryland School of Medicine long enough to get his lab up and running, but he is already receiving generous philanthropic support for his research efforts at Maryland from donors who previously supported his efforts at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. During a recent visit to Boca Raton, Florida, Judith Anne Hecht Stoll made a gift of $200,000 to continue supporting Dr. Strome's ground-breaking research activities.

Stoll, the widow of former Chicago publishing executive Richard H. Stoll, Sr., was a generous supporter of Dr. Strome at the Mayo Clinic and is confident that his research will continue to flourish at the University of Maryland. "I made this gift in Dick's (her late husband) name, in gratitude for what Dr. Strome did for us," says Mrs. Stoll. Dr. Strome performed a very complicated operation that took more than 13 hours. "He was so compassionate,” added Mrs. Stoll. "I don't know what we would have done without him."

According to Dr. Strome, "Providing the most compassionate care possible and making new discoveries to elevate our understanding of head and neck cancers is a great reward for what I do as a physician and scientist. Even more rewarding are the relationships you establish with patients and their families. To be honored in this manner is truly a privilege ”¦ and I will make sure that Mrs. Stoll's financial support is used to make advances in our knowledge of head and neck cancer."

Mrs. Stoll hopes that this gift will encourage others to come forward and make gifts to support the research and clinical care efforts of the new Department of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. "I do not know of anyone more worthy of support, given the brilliance of Scott's work and the help he will be able to give to so many others."
