Research

Clinical research is the main focus of departmental research activity. Multiple divisions within the department are pursuing a wide variety of research in state-of-the-art technologies, including CT, MR imaging, SPECT imaging, teleradiology, and picture-archiving and communication system (PACS).

Jason Hostetter, a resident in our department was selected as the winner of the First Innovation Accelerator Award from the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine’s Innovation Committee in 2016 for his project titled “Web-based radiology educational platform with support for fully anonymized DICOM cases”. One of our recently graduated residents was awarded the First Place Trainee Prize at the 2016 annual meeting of the Association of University Radiologists. Another one of our recently graduated residents was the project leader, along with three other current residents serving as investigators, on a $10,000 grant awarded by the Society of Pediatric Radiology Research and Education Foundation.

Resources:  Several full-time academic administrative assistants and a research administrator support the faculty and residents in the production of grant applications and publications. More than 10,000 square feet of dedicated and well-equipped basic research space, including new small animal imaging instrumentation, are assigned to this department on the medical school campus. Additional space and equipment are devoted to resident research and education activities, including a state-of-the-art conference room.

One of our great strengths is informatics, with resources including:

  1. Labs: Some of the smartest and most forward thinking developers in medical informatics work in defined structures within the department.
    1. Biomedical Data Mining Laboratory (BDML)
    2. Magnetic Resonance Research Center (MRRC)
    3. Maryland Research in Informatics & Analytics Development lab (MYRIAD)
  2. Mentors: Research oriented faculty members are available to work with residents on projects, providing orientation and advice.
  3. Fellows: We have a post-residency informatics fellowship that provides up to 50% academic time.
  4. Residents:  We have some incredible talent in this residency when it comes to technical know-how.  We are all great resources for each other.

With the goal of continuing and further encouraging informatics project development, our department has created an Innovation Committee tasked to review and allocate resources to promising informatics ideas submitted by UMMC faculty and residents. This committee will help fund and organize the development of proof of concept prototypes that can pursue additional outside grants and resources which may bring it to commercial fruition.
