The University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research was established to improve the quality of life for those who suffer from celiac disease by providing treatment, support and dietary information to patients and their families (See Facts about Celiac Disease). The center is part of the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. The center is also funded by contributions from the celiac community and the public.
The Center is committed to improving the diagnosis and treatment of the disease through basic science research, education and public awareness. Understanding the cause and prevalence of celiac disease is a primary goal.
The University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research has embarked on a five-year, multi-center blood screening study to establish the prevalence of this condition in the United States. So far, approximately 10,000 people have participated in the study. Preliminary findings show that as many as 1 in 150 Americans has celiac disease.
