Treatment Options and Research

Our Head and Neck Oncology specialists are experts in the complex anatomy of the head and neck and at responding to patient concerns about speech, swallowingand appearance.

Patients receive consultation and care from a team of surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, head and neck radiologists, general and oral pathologists, nurses, social workers, nutritionists and speech-language pathologists.

The experienced team works together throughout the diagnosis and treatment process to design a coordinated care plan that often includes complex or aggressive therapies that are only available at academic medical centers. To ensure continuity of care, the team also meets weekly to evaluate patients, review treatment plans, and examine new therapies that could benefit patients.

Treatment is geared toward each patient's individual needs. Our team's patient-centered approach allows new patients to talk with all of the specialists involved in their care so they can begin reviewing their options. Patients who have not had success with other treatments can draw on the team's experience in using leading-edge technology, innovative protocols, and new therapies to offer potential solutions.

Throughout the course of treatment, the team emphasizes ongoing communication with patients, families and referring physicians.

UMGCC clinicians routinely serve as principal investigators for clinical trials aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment options. Through clinical trials, UMGCC is a national leader in making new treatment aproaches available to patients before they become mainstream. These studies offer patients in the Head and Neck Oncology service access to new treatments that are not yet widely available, such as:

  • Gene therapy
  • Chemoprevention protocols for pre-malignant lesions and second primary cancer
  • Research protocols for preservation of salivary function
  • Immunotherapy for advanced disease
  • Molecular biomarker discovery programs
  • Tissue banking
