Q: What does the program offer?

A:

The program prepares qualified applicants for a career in medical dosimetry. Graduates of our medical dosimetry program are eligible for national certification by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board after six months of additional clinical experience. The latter six month clinical experience requirement, stipulated by the MDCB, is outside of the control of the School of Medical Dosimetry, and is subject to change at any time. Applicants and students should contact the MDCB with questions regarding this timeline.

Only two students are accepted into the program each year. This ensures that each student receives ample personal attention and can work closely with our dosimetrists and physicists.

Q: How long is the program?

A:

Our medical dosimetry program is 12-months long. It starts September 1st and ends August 31st of the following year.

Q: What are the objectives of the program?

The objectives of this program include:

  • Provide an education that facilitates the mastery of entry-level dosimetry skills through didactic and clinical experiences.
  • Provide an orientation to the range of health care settings in which dosimetrists practice.
  • Foster continued development of critical thinking, analysis and problem solving.
  • Promote a commitment to community and professional service.

Q: How is the department situated and how is it staffed?

A:

Our department has four facilities, one at our main campus in Baltimore City within the University of Maryland Medical Center, at 22 S. Greene St., Baltimore, MD 21201. We also have three outreach clinics in Maryland. Thus, we staff 10 radiation oncologists, 11 Ph.D. level physicists, and nine medical dosimetrists.

Students will spend over 90 percent of their time at our downtown facility at UMMC. Students thus will have access to our three new Varian linear accelerators, each equipped with portal imaging and two with Onboard Imaging. We also have a Gamma Knife and an active brachytherapy program.

Q: What are the admission requirements?

A:

Applicants must be either: (1) a registered radiation therapist with a minimum of one-year of clinical experience or (2) a holder of a baccalaureate degree in the physical sciences with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 (preferably with at least one year of physics coursework). All applicants must have completed post-secondary instruction in the following areas:

  • Basic mathematics, including algebra, trigonometry and introductory calculus
  • Basic physics at the freshman college level
  • Oral and written communication
  • Biology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Medical terminology
  • Computer competency

Q: What does the curriculum include?

A:

The curriculum includes didactic lectures, laboratory exercises and clinical instruction.

Q: When is the deadline for accepting applications?

A:

Applications are accepted through December 1st of each year. Interviews with selected candidates are scheduled between January 1st and March 15th.
