Graduate Education and Practice
Purpose:
To foster collaborative practice/academic relationships that lead to advanced practice registered nursing student placements and facilitate student recruitment at University of Maryland Medical Center as well as faculty practice sites.
Objectives:
- Address educational gaps related to current practice
- Understand practice pre-requisites and the education necessary to achieve a more prepared graduate
- Improve transition of new graduate advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to professional practice
- Prioritize partnership to restructure for value-driven practice
- Expand UMMC partners on curriculum committee
- Explore innovative solutions to meet the professional education needs of experienced APRNs
Shannon Idzik, DNP, ANP-BC, FAANP, FAAN
Professor and Associate Dean
Doctor of Nursing Practice Program

Dr. Idzik is a professor at University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON). She is also associate dean of UMSON’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. She has been on the UMSON faculty since 2005. She has served as program director for UMSON’s Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (NP) program and director of the DNP program.
Dr. Idzik maintains a faculty practice as a nurse practitioner with University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center’s Comprehensive CARE Center. She is active in the professional community, serving on various boards and taskforces. She serves as a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education site evaluator and the nurse practitioner representative to CRISP, the regional health information exchange. She has served as an appointed member of the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission Physician Alignment and Engagement workgroup, leading recommendation no. 1 regarding the removal of scope of practice barriers for advanced practice nurses on the Maryland Action Coalition on the Future of Nursing for more than five years.
Dr. Idzik previously served as treasurer of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and is currently its president-elect. She was NONPF’s representative to current revisions to the National Taskforce Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs. She is a past president of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland. She was awarded the 2012 American Association of Nurse Practitioners State Award for Excellence and the 2015 NONPF Policy Award. In addition, she directed the DNP program during UMSON’s BSN-DNP transition and was member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Task Force on Implementation of the DNP.
Carmel McComiskey, DNP, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP
Director of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants
University of Maryland Medical Center
Dr. McComiskey is the director of nurse practitioners and physician assistants at UMMC and assistant professor at University of Maryland School of Nursing. She is certified in pediatric acute and primary care and has practiced in pediatric surgery for 40 years, providing care for children with enuresis and bowel management needs.
Dr. McComiskey is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland, and National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. She is also a charter member and past president of the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses Association (APSNA) and was the recipient of organization’s Founder's Award. She represented APSNA in the revising of the American Nurses Association’s Pediatric Nursing Scope and Standards. She is also an evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
Dr. McComiskey’s research includes voiding dysfunction. She has authored many presentations and publications. She has also served as editor of Nursing Care of the Pediatric Surgical Patient (second and third edition) and assistant editor of The Journal of Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care. She also served on the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing.
