Dear Applicant,

Dr. Davis photo

Thank you for your interest in our training programs and in the Department of Medicine. I hope the information in the material that follows proves informative.

The University of Maryland is the nation's fifth oldest Medical School, and the School and the Department of Medicine enjoy histories rich in contributions to superb care, advancement of medical knowledge and an enthusiastic commitment to education. We are particularly proud of our record in teaching; this remains a core mission of the Department today. At the center of our teaching efforts are our residency programs, as all of our conferences, rounds and seminars are aimed at providing an educational focus for our residents. The quality of this educational mission is assured by the presence of a large and dedicated faculty whose many accomplishments are a source of great pride for the Department.

Our flexibility in remodeling the residency has proven to be another educational asset, leading to tangible improvements in the inpatient rotations, ambulatory experience, electives and conferences. We have expanded significantly opportunities residents have to engage in research, including a comprehensive mentoring program in career pathways. Participation in research projects is growing rapidly and has forged an even stronger bond between residents and faculty, allowing our residents to secure superb fellowship positions across the country. The residents also benefit from broad clinical training in our many inpatient and ambulatory venues.  The remarkable growth in the Department's excellent national reputation has been due to the quality of faculty and residents and the collegial atmosphere in the hospitals, outpatient practices and laboratories. Maryland is an exciting place to learn and discover.

My hope is that you will want to visit our program, meet with our residents, faculty and students, and view our modern facilities to obtain a firsthand impression of the many strengths in our Department. My sense is that you will agree that, while we are the beneficiaries of a proud tradition begun in 1807, we are looking to a future bright with promise and dedicated to compassionate service, superior education and innovative research.

All of us look forward to meeting you and making you feel welcome.

Best wishes,
