The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is the home of the UMMC Dietetic Internship. We are a 705-bed academic medical center affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical School. Established in 1823, we are one of the nation's oldest hospitals. UMMC is part of the larger University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), a private, not-for-profit network of nine academic, community and specialty hospitals as well as outpatient facilities, annually serving over 300,000 people.
The UMMC Dietetic Internship, started in 1990, is a clinically-focused ten-month program. We start in September the first Tuesday after Labor Day and finish late June. Four interns are accepted annually, allowing extensive individual attention between intern and preceptor. Interns are mentored to develop clinical competencies, critical thinking, and complex nutrition assessment, counseling and communication skills. Rotations, classes and other learning experiences are designed to meet the Accreditation Standards for Dietetic Internship Programs established by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
