University of Maryland Orthopaedics Opens New Outpatient Clinical Practice at Camden Yards

New Office in Warehouse Operated by University of Maryland Faculty Physicians

BALTIMORE – When you think of Camden Yards, you probably think of baseball, crab cakes, hot dogs and cold beer. But now the historic baseball stadium/ warehouse complex on West Camden Street also offers outpatient orthopaedic services by University of Maryland specialists at this convenient downtown Baltimore location.

The Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM) has opened a new outpatient practice at the old B&O Warehouse at Camden Yards. The practice, operated by University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. (FPI), is located in newly renovated space measuring more than 10,000 square feet on the fifth floor of the warehouse at 351 W. Camden St.

The clinical practice, located in Suite 501, has 12 exam rooms, a physical therapy studio, e-lounge and two X-ray rooms. The office space has been renovated to showcase the architectural beauty of the 1905 building, with views of the ballpark as well as the harbor and downtown. But it also has a contemporary feel with modern furniture and lighting fixtures.

UM SOM faculty orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine experts who specialize in treating injuries to the spine, hands, knees and joints and other musculoskeletal problems will see patients there Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional hours may be added on Saturdays depending on the need, according to Andrew N. Pollak, MD, the James Lawrence Kernan Professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Physical and occupational therapy also will be available.

"We're very pleased to open this new outpatient orthopaedic and sports medicine practice at Camden Yards," says Dr. Pollak, who is also chief of orthopaedics at the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). "We couldn't have found a better location. Not only is Camden Yards only blocks away from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the University of Maryland Medical Center and its trauma center but it is also centrally located for many people who work in downtown Baltimore."

Physical therapy will be provided at the facility through a new collaboration between Department of Orthopaedics and the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science (PTRS).

"This is an outstanding opportunity to establish a clinical component of our Physical Therapy Department," said Mark W. Rogers, PhD, PT, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science. "We are excited about this collaboration with Orthopaedics where we are able to offer patients a full range of orthopaedic and PT services."

Other clinical services – including neurosurgery, medicine and emergency medicine – will be offered at the location as well.

The practice offers curbside valet parking for patients for a nominal fee.

UM orthopaedic surgeons see patients at three other University of Maryland community practice sites in Timonium, College Park and Columbia. UM doctors also see patients at the University of Maryland Medical Center's University and Midtown campuses in Baltimore, the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air and at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute near Woodlawn.

In addition to the community orthopaedic practices, the UM SOM Department of Orthopaedics is also working in collaboration with University of Maryland, College Park to develop the new Center for Sports Medicine, Health & Human Performance. The Center will feature a state-of-the-art sports medicine outpatient practice facility that will provide innovative diagnostics and advanced orthopaedic clinical care for Maryland's student athletes, students and the general public, to address a broad spectrum of athletic injuries. Within the UM SOM, the center will bring together a range of research areas to collaborate in sports-related research including neurology, physical therapy and rehabilitation science; and cardiovascular health.

Major transit lines run through the Camden Yards complex, including the light rail connecting the north and south Baltimore suburbs, and the MARC Camden line, which connects Camden Yards to Washington, via College Park. MARC added additional midday trains to accommodate the traffic between the two University of Maryland institutions. The complex is also adjacent to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295) and I-395.
