Overview

Mesothelioma is a rare, but aggressive, cancer that often attacks the lining of the lungs and chest cavity but also can be found in the lining of the heart and abdomen. Caused primarily by exposure to asbestos, it is a cancer that can take decades to develop. Dr. Joseph Friedberg, thoracic surgeon-in-chief of the University of Maryland Medical System, discusses who is at risk for developing mesothelioma and why it is so difficult to diagnose and treat. Dr. Friedberg also talks about surgery, chemotherapy and other treatment options.
