Maryland Proton Treatment Center Groundbreaking
William E. (Brit) Kirwan, Chancellor of the University System of Maryland, and his wife Patty were honored guests at the groundbreaking of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center at the University of Maryland Biopark on April 17, 2012. Mrs. Kirwan was a patient at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, where patients and their families gather with staff to celebrate the end of radiation treatment by ringing a bell mounted in the patient waiting area. In this video segment from the groundbreaking ceremonies, the Kirwans shared their story and expressed appreciation for the care they received at the cancer center, before leading a symbolic ringing of bells with members of the audience.
