Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma
In this four-minute video, Dr. H. Richard Alexander, professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and surgical oncologist at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center, explains his research laboratory's recent discovery of some important cellular pathways and proteins that affect the growth of tumor cells in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. Dr. Alexander and his colleague, Sheelu Varghese, Ph.D., found that these proteins are very high in patients with poor survival. In pre-clinical studies, the researchers tested specific drugs that show promise as targeted therapies against these proteins to inhibit mesothelioma growth. The team hopes to begin clinical trials using these drugs for patients in the near future.
