Se debe armar el glucómetro de acuerdo con las instrucciones específicas que éste trae y alistar todos los suministros, incluyendo una nueva tira reactiva y una lanceta desechable. La lanceta se coloca en el dispositivo de punción.

Inserte una nueva tira reactiva dentro del medidor.

Se deben lavar las manos y luego punzar suavemente el lado (la parte menos sensible) del dedo de la mano con la lanceta para sacar una gota de sangre.

Toque la tira reactiva en dirección a la gota de sangre. La sangre automáticamente resulta atraída hacia la tira reactiva. El medidor o glucómetro calcula entonces su nivel de glucemia.

En el cuaderno de anotaciones, la persona registra la hora del día y la lectura del azúcar en la sangre que aparece en el glucómetro. Algunos glucómetros conservan un registro de este proceso automáticamente.
