Cuando se presenta una reacción alérgica en el organismo, células especializadas del tejido liberan un químico denominado histamina. Éste causa síntomas de alergia como estornudo, comezón, lagrimeo y flujo nasal. Los antihistamínicos pueden reducir la inflamación, la comezón y la hinchazón mediante el bloqueo de los efectos de la histamina, lo que reduce los síntomas de la alergia.
