En los niños, el primer diente típicamente comienza a erupcionar entre el sexto y octavo mes de vida. Los signos de la dentición son: babeo, irritabilidad, inflamación y sensibilidad de las encías, problemas para dormir, rechazo al alimento, ansias de morder objetos duros y, posiblemente, fiebre leve. La incomodidad que resulta de la dentición se debe a la presión ejercida por los dientes al salir en el tejido de la boca, conocido como membrana periodontal.
