El sacro es una estructura ósea en forma de escudo que está localizada en la base de las vértebras lumbares. Está conectado a la pelvis, forma la pared pélvica posterior y fortalece y estabiliza la pelvis. Unidas en el mismo extremo del sacro, se encuentran de 2 a 4 vértebras pequeñas y parcialmente fusionadas conocidas como el cóccix o “hueso de la cola” que brinda un leve soporte a los órganos pélvicos, pero realmente es un hueso de poco uso.
