Existen diversas causas para los periodos menstruales anormales, como la hiperplasia endometrial, los pólipos endometriales, los fibroides uterinos y la función anormal de la glándula tiroides o de la pituitaria. El endometrio es el tejido que reviste el útero. Cuando éste se vuelve anormalmente grueso, esta condición se llama hiperplasia endometrial y puede causar sangrado menstrual profuso y prolongado.
