La obesidad aumenta el riesgo de una persona de padecer enfermedades y muerte debido a diabetes, accidente cerebrovascular, cardiopatía, hipertensión, colesterol alto, así como enfermedades del riñón y la vejiga. La obesidad puede incrementar el riesgo de desarrollo de algunos tipos de cáncer e igualmente es un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de osteoartritis y apnea del sueño.
