Son un tipo de glóbulo blanco responsable de gran parte de la protección del cuerpo contra la infección. Se producen en la médula ósea y son liberados en el torrente sanguíneo para que viajen a cualquier parte donde se necesiten. Cuando la demanda es alta, se producen grandes cantidades de formas inmaduras de neutrófilos, llamados cayados.
