Conformadas por la pia madre (la más cercana a las estructuras del SNC), la duramadre y la aracnoides (las más alejadas del SNC), las meninges protegen los vasos sanguíneos y contienen líquido cefalorraquídeo. éstas son las estructuras involucradas en la meningitis, la inflamación de las meninges que de tornarse severa puede convertirse en encefalitis, la cual es una inflamación del cerebro.
