El bebé con galactosemia no puede metabolizar un azúcar simple llamado galactosa, por lo que ésta alcanza niveles altos en el cuerpo, causando daño al hígado, al sistema nervioso central y a otros sistemas de órganos. El niño con galactosemia puede manifestar ictericia, vómitos, letargo, irritabilidad y convulsiones.
