El desgarro de Mallory-Weiss surge a causa de vómito, tos o convulsiones prolongadas. Típicamente, la membrana mucosa en la unión del esófago y estómago manifiesta laceraciones con sangrado evidente a través de la presencia de sangre roja y brillante en el vómito o heces sanguinolentas. Éste puede deberse a la ingesta excesiva de alcohol. Es una condición aguda que generalmente se resuelve en 10 días con tratamiento especial.
