Cateterización de la vejiga en el hombre

La cateterización se lleva a cabo al insertar un catéter (tubo hueco, por lo general, con un balón inflable en la punta) en la vejiga urinaria cuando existe una obstrucción urinaria, después de procedimientos quirúrgicos de la uretra, en los pacientes inconscientes por anestesia quirúrgica u otras razones o en caso de cualquier problema en donde se deba mantener la vejiga vacía (descomprimida) y garantizar el flujo de orina. En el hombre, la cateterización es algo más difícil e incómoda que en la mujer, debido a la mayor longitud de su uretra.
