El asesoramiento genético (y diagnóstico prenatal) permite a los padres obtener conocimiento para tomar decisiones inteligentes con respecto a un posible embarazo y su desarrollo. Si se produce el embarazo, la pareja puede querer evaluar al feto a través del diagnóstico prenatal.
