Los efectos de la artritis reumatoide pueden progresar hasta el grado de ser discapacitantes. Las deformidades características de la etapa tardía de la enfermedad, tales como la desviación ulnar (cubital) de los huesos de las manos o la desviación en cuello de cisne, se deben a que los huesos no están alineados porque los músculos y tendones de un lado de la articulación dominan los del otro lado.
