Ateroesclerosis

La aterosclerosis es una enfermedad en la que se deposita grasa en la pared de una arteria. Normalmente, las paredes de una arteria son lisas y permiten el paso fácil del flujo de sangre. Sin embargo, si se daña su revestimiento interno, la grasa, el colesterol, las plaquetas y otras sustancias se pueden acumular en la región dañada de la pared arterial. Con el tiempo, se acumula tejido y se forma una placa que disminuye el diámetro de la arteria. Cuando el diámetro es muy estrecho, se corre el riesgo de que un vaso quede completamente obstruido si se forma un trombo en el segmento enfermo.
