How to Use This Medicine

Lotion, Liquid

  • Use this medicine on your skin only.
  • You can buy the medicine without a doctor's prescription. Read and follow the instructions on the medicine label. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to use this medicine.
  • You must use this medicine at least 15 minutes BEFORE you are exposed to poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac. When the lotion dries, it keeps the oils in the plants from touching your skin and causing a rash.
  • Shake the bottle well before each use.
  • Rub a thin layer of the lotion on your skin to form a smooth wet layer.
  • When the lotion dries, you will see a clay-like coating on the protected parts of your skin.
  • You will need to put more lotion on your skin at least every 4 hours, or sooner if the medicine rubs off.
  • You should not use the medicine in or near your eyes. If you do get the medicine in your eyes, rinse them well with cool water for at least 20 minutes. Tell your doctor if you have eye redness or eye pain that does not go away.
  • When your skin no longer needs protection, you can wash the medicine off with soap and water.
  • Until the medicine on your skin has dried, do not get close to a fire.

How to Store and Dispose of This Medicine

  • Keep the bottle closed tightly and store it at room temperature away from heat, direct light, and moisture. The medicine contains alcohol and should be kept away from fire.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • You should not use other creams, lotions, or skin medicines on the same areas of your skin that you are using bentoquatam, unless your doctor has told you to.
