The Art of Medicine
If knowing about the past can help us understand the present and plan for the future, then looking at the history of medicine may help us realize principals that influence our health care system today.
In this interview with Sharon Boston, Dr. Richard Colgan, a family medicine specialist at the University of Maryland Medical Center, shares what he's learned about medical history and how these lessons apply to the doctor-patient relationship. He delved into the topic while doing research for a book, "Advice for the Young Physician on the Art of Medicine," in which he explores medical practices from the days of Hippocrates which are still in use today.
In this podcast, Dr. Colgan also talks about the increased use of technology in medicine, the concept of humanism in medicine and "the art of healing." Dr. Colgan is also an associate professor of family and community medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
