Medical students (2-4) are assigned to the UMMS service for one week as a required part of their specialty surgery rotation. One senior medical student may elect to take urology at UMMS or the VA for one month.
Students from other medical schools may elect a one-month rotation as well and this usually occurs during the months July through November, when residency applications are active.
The residents are responsible for a great deal of the day-to-day teaching of the medical students. The teaching takes place in the clinic, OR, on the wards, or in small sit-down discussion sessions. There are scheduled lectures for the medical students with attendings and the final surgery examination contains questions from these lectures. The attending reviews and approves grades before submission.
