Scans of a human abdomen and chest

The UM Medical Center is committed to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer with the purchase of a revolutionary PET/CT scanner made by Philips. It enables physicians to diagnose cancer early, treat it with extraordinary precision and monitor the results quickly and accurately.

The combination PET/CT scanner provides important information in the detection and treatment of many conditions, most notably various forms of cancer and heart disease.

Cancer

The detailed images the PET/CT scanner generates will play a key role not only in detecting cancer but also as doctors plan precise radiation therapies that target cancer cells but avoid healthy cells. The combination scanner is also useful in detecting the reoccurrence of cancer, even with tiny tumors that cannot be seen on other imaging devices, such as those tumors obscured by scarring from previously destroyed cancer cells.

The PET/CT scanner can help doctors with the initial staging, diagnosis, restaging and monitoring of therapy for many forms of cancer, including the following:

  • Breast Cancer

  • Cervical Cancer

  • Colon Cancer

  • Esophageal Cancer

  • Head and Neck Cancer

  • Lung Cancer

  • Lymphoma

  • Melanoma

  • Ovarian Cancer

  • Thyroid Cancer

Heart Disease

One of the big challenges cardiologists and cardiac surgeons face is getting detailed images of coronary arteries, the blockage of which is responsible for many heart problems.

The combination PET/CT, however, will enable doctors to see these images, as well as calcium build-up in blood vessels and the strength of the contractions in various parts of the heart. The new scanner will also help doctors determine if heart cells are still alive and metabolizing, even if it appears the heart muscle is not moving.
