OR Nurse Fellowship
The OR Nurse Fellowship is designed to prepare new nursing graduates and nurses who have no prior work experience in a perioperative setting to perform the roles of the registered nurse in the operating room. The program is tailored to meet each individual's specific training needs, based upon their prior educational and work experiences.
The program is offered three times a year: mid summer, fall, and winter. Applications for a position in the fellowship are accepted on line through the normal employment process. Applications may be submitted when the position for the “RN OR Nurse Fellowship” is listed as an available opening on the website.
The fellowship combines a formal perioperative training course, additional classroom time, as well as simulation training in a lab setting prior to entering the operating room. Trainees are oriented to both the RN circulator and the scrub roles. After a dedicated period of time with primary preceptors in each role, the trainees will rotate through multiple core specialties to gain an understanding of a wide variety of the surgical procedures commonly performed at the Medical Center and in the Trauma Center.
In addition, the program also includes an introduction to other perioperative areas such as the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Same Day Surgery, Central Sterile Processing and Anesthesia. New graduate fellowship trainees also participate in the year long nurse residency program that is led by the department of Professional Development. Courses and workshops associated with this fellowship are approved for continuing education credits. For more information, call 410-328-9881.
