Health Care Plans
UMMC offers three health care plans; prescription drug and vision care benefits are included with each plan. Coverage is available to eligible full-time and part-time employees and their eligible dependents, including domestic partners, on the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
Employees can enroll in one of four categories of coverage (individual, parent/child, employee/spouse and family). The cost of coverage is shared between UMMC and employees.
Out of pocket costs under the UMMS health care plans will vary, depending on where you receive care. The highest coverage is reserved for care received by any UMMS Choice Network provider, but the plans also allow participants to receive health care from any provider in the nationwide BlueCross BlueShield preferred provider organization (PPO), or at out of network providers.
- The Gold Plan has the highest cost for employees, per paycheck, and it has the highest level of coverage with fewer out-of-pocket expenses at the time services are used.
- The Silver Plan has a lower per-paycheck premium, but higher costs for services.
- The Bronze Plan is a high-deductible option, meaning the participant will pay out of pocket for all expenses until the deductible is met. However, it will cost the least amount of money from each paycheck. (Deductible does not apply to preventative care services)
- Employees enrolled in the Bronze plan also have the option of utilizing a Health Savings Account (HSA). HSAs are like personal savings accounts used specifically for health care expenses.
Dental Care Plan
The dental care plan provides coverage for diagnostic and preventive care, basic and restorative care, major surgical procedures, major restorative procedures, and orthodontics. The plan is administered by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Coverage is available to eligible full-time and part-time employees and their eligible dependents, including domestic partners, on the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Diagnostic and preventive care services are covered at 100%. Other services are subject to a small deductible and co-insurance. The cost of coverage is shared between UMMC and employees.
UMMC provides basic life and basic accidental death & dismemberment coverage equal to 1 x your annual salary at no cost to employees. Coverage is available to eligible full-time and part-time employees on the first of the month following 90 days of employment.
UMMC provides short-term disability and long-term disability coverage for eligible employees. There is no cost to employees for this benefit.
Short-Term Disability coverage is available to eligible full-time and part-time employees on the first of the month following six months of employment. Benefits begin on the 30th day of disability and continue up to the 180th day of disability. Non-exempt employees receive 60% of their base pay while disabled. Exempt employees receive 100% of their base pay up to the 90th day of disability and 60% of their base pay thereafter, up to the 180th day of disability.
Long-Term Disability coverage is available to eligible full-time employees on the first of the month following six months of employment. If an employee is disabled, benefits commence following the expiration of short-term disability payments. Eligible employees receive 60% of their base pay while on long-term disability.
Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
UMMC offers health care and dependent care Flexible Spending Accounts and a Health Savings Account. New employees can enroll in either or both, during their first 31 days of employment or, thereafter, during the annual open enrollment period. Plans are effective on the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
Health Care FSA
This plan allows employees to pay for certain health care expenses on a pre-tax basis, including costs associated with plan deductibles, coinsurance and co-payments. Employees can allocate up to $2,500 each year to their Health Care FSA.
Dependent Care FSA
This plan can be used to pay for a variety of eligible child care and/or elder care expenses on a pre-tax basis. Employees can allocate up to $5,000 each year to their Dependent Care FSA.
Limited Health Care FSA
This plan allows employees, who are enrolled in the Bronze Health Plan, to pay for certain dental and vision care expenses on a pre-tax basis, including costs associated with plan deductibles, coinsurance and co-payments. Employees can allocate up to $2,500 each year to their Limited Health Care FSA.
Health Savings Accounts (available only to Bronze Health Plan members)
A health care savings account (HSA) is a way to put aside money from each paycheck on a pre-tax basis. The employee controls how much money is set aside, when it is spent, and how it is used. Employees are allowed to draw out money from the account to pay for health care expenses. Money deposited into the account is not taxed and withdrawals made for qualified medical expenses are tax-free, as well as any earnings. At age 65, the account can be used as retirement savings or for medical expenses.
Step Up To Good Health
Good health is important to everyone, including our employees. UMMC has a comprehensive wellness program that encourages employees to better manage their personal health and medical conditions.
The program has five components:
- Health risk assessment (HRA)
- Healthy living programs
- 24-hour health information line
- Wellness Coaching
- Chronic condition management program
Many programs offer incentives for participation. The program is administered by a third-party health enhancement and disease management company and all information is maintained in strict confidence by the program administrator.
