Telehealth

The UM Transplant team is still seeing patients with urgent or emergent conditions. For all non-urgent medical concerns, virtual appointments are now available. We strongly encourage patients to schedule video and/or phone consults for appointments. Please contact us at 410-328-5408 to find out if telehealth is available for your next visit.

Keeping You Safe During COVID-19

Our team takes every precaution to keep you and your loved ones safe during your transplant process. Some steps we're taking include:

  • Scheduling telemedicine appointments instead of in-person whenever possible
  • Maintaining a COVID-free floor for our transplant patients
  • Testing all donors and recipients 48-72 hours prior to surgery, then quarantining until surgery
  • Answering your questions about the COVID vaccine and transplantation

If you have any questions about our COVID-19 protocols, we encourage you to ask. You may also learn more about our approach to COVID-19 in this video.

COVID-19 Clinical Trial for Transplant Recipients and Candidates

The University of Maryland is leading a trial to learn more about how well COVID-19 vaccines work in transplant recipients, and in those waiting for a transplant. See if you are a candidate for the trial.

Expert Organ Transplantation

For more than 50 years, the University of Maryland Medical Center's (UMMC) transplant team has given those needing an organ transplant the opportunity to savor more time with the people they love and a healthier quality of life.

We treat our patients with compassionate care, becoming lifelong partners in their health. Performing more than 400 transplant surgeries each year, our teams of transplant surgeons use innovative techniques and demonstrate surgical excellence.

We see patients at locations throughout Maryland, and we can schedule eVisits to evaluate out-of-state patients interested in multiple listing with UMMC.

As a full service transplantation center, our patients come in all sizes. Although the majority of our transplant patients are adults, we also have a team of doctors who specialize in performing pediatric transplants of the kidney and liver.

Why Choose the UMMC Transplant?

Choosing your transplant team is one of the most crucial decisions you and your family will make. We offer:

Advanced Expertise With High-Risk Transplants

We have the expertise and capability to perform leading-edge transplants for even the most complex cases, including those that other transplant centers have turned away.

Living Donor Transplant Surgery

We perform living transplants for kidney and liver. For kidneys, we can do directed donations from someone you know, non-directed from someone you don't or paired donations when your donor is not a good match for you.

Innovative Transplant Techniques

We were one of the first centers in the nation to perform laparoscopic technique on the donor in a living kidney donation surgery. This groundbreaking procedure speeds healing and minimizes complications for donors.

Transplant Clinical Trials

As a university-based program, we offer access to the latest research and clinical trials in transplantation

New Treatments for Better Patient Care

We are among the first transplant hospitals to provide new treatments that include:

  • Liver transplant for bile duct cancer
  • Single-incision laparoscopic kidney donation. Our surgeons use small instruments to remove a donor kidney, leaving only a 1-inch incision.
  • One-operation kidney transplant for patients with polycystic kidney disease. Our surgeons remove both kidneys and place a donated kidney in just one surgery.

Effective Liver and Kidney Failure Treatment

We can offer you advanced, organ failure care, no matter where you are along the course of an illness.

  • We offer some of the most advanced treatments available for liver failure. We have specialized ICUs and aggressive treatments for liver cancer, alcoholic liver disease and hepatitis C.
  • For patients who have kidney failure, our unique dialysis access clinic supports patients with options tailored to their needs.
