Flu Vaccination Campaign Starts October 1; Mandatory for all staff
The annual flu vaccination campaign is under way. The hospital's flu policy (HRM-114) requires that all employees either be vaccinated or submit appropriate documentation for declining. Declining is allowed only for medical or religious reasons.
Employee Health Services will offer the influenza vaccine through December 5. UMMC employees, residents, attendings and volunteers can walk in to EHS, Monday - Friday, 7 am – 4 pm to receive the influenza vaccine for free. With the vaccine, you're taking a key step in keeping yourself, your family, and your patients healthy.
If you have a medical or religious reason for declining the vaccine or if you get vaccinated elsewhere, you need to provide documentation to remain compliant with the policy.
Medical contraindications include allergy to the vaccine or a vaccine component or a history of Guillain Barre. This year, an egg-free vaccine will be available to individuals between the ages of 18-49. An egg allergy for anybody under age 50 in no longer a valid reason to decline the vaccine. Individuals over age 50 can still decline for egg allergy since the egg-free vaccine is not indicated for this age group.
Please note that, if you submitted documentation last year for a medical contraindication or religious objection, and it was accepted by EHS, you may not be required to resubmit documentation again this year. The exceptions to this are individuals between the ages of 18-49 who declined last year because of egg allergy, as noted above. Employees who have valid documentation on file will receive an e-mail confirming that they do not have to resubmit the information.
The declination form is available online and can be submitted electronically. Go to the flu-free zone website link on the home page of the Intranet for more information on Employee Health hours and the roving flu cart.
