Live Near Your Work
"I no longer have to move around because I own my own home."
UMMC Employee and first Live Near Your Work recipient
In January 2010, The University of Maryland Medical Center, in partnership with The Baltimore Department of Housing and Community Development, launched its "Live Near Your Work (LNYW)" Program to encourage employees of UMMC to buy homes near their workplace.
This initiative was designed to help staff buy homes, as well as to stabilize the neighborhoods surrounding the Medical Center by stimulating home ownership in targeted communities. UMMC provides a minimum of $1,500 to staff who are buying a home in one of the eligible neighborhoods in Baltimore City. The Housing Authority of Baltimore City also provides a grant of $1,000 toward the down payment and closing costs.
Ms. Sharron Better is the first UMMC employee to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Ms. Better, a mother of two daughters, purchased a three bedroom townhouse in Northwest Baltimore and closed in late April. She has worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant on the Mother Baby Unit for 10 years with plans of pursuing a Nursing degree this fall at Baltimore City Community College. Ms. Better admits she is excited and overwhelmed at the same time, but believes it was all worth it. The process was easy, and UMMC staff readily assisted her to complete the process. The area where she has purchased her home is close to her daughters' school and is close to family.
