Community Benefit

To be recognized as a community benefit in Maryland, an activity must be intended to address community needs and priorities primarily through disease prevention and improvement of health status.


In a recent survey, 200 employees reported that they spent an average of 1-2 hours per week in community-based organizations, healthcare, or religious-sponsored volunteer activities.

Making a Difference

Through the use of key programs and services, UMMC is providing important resources to encourage health and healing among members of the community.

Community Health Needs Assessment

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("ACA"), required hospitals to perform a community health needs assessment, adopt an implementation strategy to meet the needs identified, and beginning in 2013, perform an assessment at least every three years thereafter.

The University of Maryland Medical Center, with its Shock Trauma Center, is known world-wide as the premier resource for trauma care.
