Definición

Es cuando una mujer desarrolla características sexuales masculinas o un niño recién nacido que tiene aumento de las características masculinas al nacer.

La virilización puede ser causada por:

  • Exceso de producción de testosterona
  • Uso de esteroides anabolizantes

En las niñas recién nacidas, la afección puede ser causada por:

  • Ciertos medicamentos que la madre tomó durante el embarazo
  • Hiperplasia suprarrenal congénita en el bebé o la madre
  • Otras afecciones médicas en la madre (como tumores de los ovarios o glándulas suprarrenales que liberan hormonas masculinas)
