Las arterias coronarias suministran sangre al músculo cardiaco mismo. El daño o bloqueo de una arteria coronaria puede causar lesiones al corazón. Normalmente, la sangre fluye libre de obstáculos a través de una arteria coronaria. Sin embargo, si la pared interior de una arteria coronaria se daña, puede haber una acumulación de placa de colesterol, lo que estrechará progresivamente el paso de la sangre. La sangre coagulada que trata de atravesar el vaso sanguíneo puede encontrar el conducto demasiado angosto y la arteria puede estrecharse completamente o bloquearse. Una arteria bloqueada causa una privación de oxígeno, o isquemia, en la parte del músculo cardiaco a la que esa arteria suministra. El resultado es un ataque al corazón.
